What is unique about the Nordlys Hybrid Experience?
The Nordlys Hybrid System by Ellipse is the only FDA-cleared device of its kind using up to 80% less energy than other similar devices. Unlike other sources of broadband light, the light delivered using Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) is a narrow waveband. The SWT applicators filter out unneeded light wavebands resulting in precise treatments with less energy and therefore less discomfort for patients.
What treatments can I have done with the Nordlys System?
At Colorado Dermatology Group, our doctors treat many conditions with the Nordlys including:
- Sun Damage and Pigmentation
- Age spots
- Rosacea
- Redness of face and chest
- Broken Capillaries and Facial Veins
- Port Wine Stains
- Surgical and Traumatic Scars
- Acne Scars
- Fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity
Do the Nordlys Hybrid treatments hurt?
Many patients describe the SWT treatments like a flick from a rubber band followed by a sensation of heat. Most patients find the treatments to be tolerable with only mild discomfort compared to other similar technologies. The bright light emitted by the device is often more surprising than the discomfort. Eye protection will be worn during the treatment. Topical numbing creams are only recommended during the FRAX 1550 Resurfacing treatments. Overall, most patients report pain at a 3-5 on the 1-10 pain scale.
How long does a treatment take?
Treatment times vary between 5 and 60 minutes depending on the treatment and area being addressed. Patients undergoing a FRAX resurfacing treatment may need to arrive one hour prior to their scheduled treatment for the application of a topical numbing agent.
Will I need to take time off from work or school?
It is not required that you take time off after a Nordlys treatment. You will likely be mildly red, but there are no strict limitations to your routine after treatment.
What can I expect to see after my treatment?
After SWT treatments, slight erythema (redness) will persist for 1-3 days. The skin may feel warm or even swollen. Cooling the skin with an ice pack may be comforting and can be applied as needed on the day of your treatment. Pigmented areas will become darker through the 3 days after treatment. These areas take on a peppery or coffee ground appearance and will slowly slough off over the first 10 days after treatment. Makeup may be worn the day after your treatment.
Who is a good candidate for the Nordlys Hybrid Experience?
It is important to have a medical history completed during your initial consultation to discuss possible contraindications to treatment. In general, individuals with the following conditions should not be treated with the Nordlys Hybrid System:
- People taking photosensitizing drugs
- Sun exposure in the month before treatment
- Presence of spray tan or self-tanner
- Active infection and/or injury in the intended treatment area
- History of abnormal scarring (keloids, thick scars, discolored scars)
- Skin cancers in the intended treatment area
- Tattoos in the intended treatment area
What do I need to do prior to my Nordlys Hybrid Experience?
It is important to avoid sun exposure for one month before and one month after treatment. Sun exposure may cause you to hyperpigment and possibly burn, and it counteracts the positive effects of your Nordlys Hybrid Experience.
If you have darker skin, it is often advised to pre-treat with a bleaching agent as prescribed by your physician. This should be administered one month prior to treatment and continued as directed after your treatment.
If you have a history of oral herpes (cold sores) you will be prescribed an antiviral medication to start on the day of treatment.
Do not take non-essential blood thinners for one week prior to treatment. Do not smoke in the 6 hours before treatment.
What happens on the day of treatment?
Upon arrival at the clinic, goals and expectations for treatment will be reviewed and a consent will be signed. Your skin will be cleansed, and pictures will be taken.
During treatment, protective eyewear will be placed over the eyes. A thin layer of ultrasonic gel will be placed on the treatment area.
Following the treatment, ice may be applied for comfort. It is important to avoid direct sun and wear sunscreen. You will be given specific post treatment instructions.
How many treatments with the Nordlys Hybrid System will I need?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the type of treatment, severity of skin condition, and the intensity of the treatment. Your doctor will recommend a number of treatments based on your goals. Some general estimates are:
- Sun Damage: 1-4 treatments
- Rosacea: 1-3 treatments
- Scars/Resurfacing: 2-5 treatments
How much does a Nordlys Hybrid Experience cost?
Pricing varies dependent on the type of treatment delivered and size of treatment area.
